Portland puts on an annual fundraiser called Sand In The City. Tons of sand is hauled into the square and local companies (including mine) create sand sculptures themed by children's books.
Bystanders purchase coins and use those to vote for their favorite sculptures. All the proceeds go to charity.
Given that this is a once a year event and the sculptors have day jobs, it's pretty amazing what they're able to produce.
Tom and I made it more of an adventure by riding our bikes the 4 miles from our house to downtown. Portland's designed a pretty amazing bike network. You can get most places in town without having to be on a main road without a bike lane for more then a few minutes. Below are a few of my favorite sculptures.
